If you are new to surfing you may have seen different shapes and sizes of surfboards. Short surfboards are generally under 8 ft. in my opinion. I started on a short surfboard that was thick and was probably made for someone much heavier than me. It worked well for me because I was unable to control a longboard. My balance and timing allowed me to start surfing a short surfboard immediately.
If you are a beginner you might want to try a short surfboard but odds are that you will do better with a little instruction and a longer surfboard. Once you get the hang of surfing on a larger surfboard you may want to try switching to a shorter one. I recommend that you try a surfboard that floats you well and you can control! Different surfers have different goals when it comes to surfing. Thats the beauty of it you can create your own surfing goals and they can change as you progress.
Keep in mind that surfing takes alot of discipline. While many of the surfers that you may see might not look very discipline, it takes time and perseverance to become a consistent surfer. After a few years of practice you will be able to surf in almost any condition!
I have owned dozens of new and used surfboards over the years. A few surfboards stick out in my mind. Cino shaped my a surfboard for Hawaii. It was a Hawaii Island Creation I believe. That surfboard caught small and big waves and was a great surfboard. I payed $400.00 for it in 1980. It was worth every penny!.
